Off Season Care of your Sauna

During the summer my sauna is rarely used. I know many people who use their saunas year round, but I am not one of them. The summer is not the time though to forget about your sauna. The cooler weather is coming though and the summer is a great time to take care of your sauna equipment.

If your sauna is indoors it is important to make sure that there is proper ventilation, especially if your sauna is in the basement. Increased humidity can cause mold and mildew to form. If needed, a dehumidifier will keep the moisture down.

The summer is also a great time to do a thorough cleaning of your sauna. Most saunas are made from cedar and most deck cleaners can be used. Make sure that it is very diluted though. You can make your own solution with 2 gallons of water, a half cup of TSP and a half cup of bleach. This will have your cedar looking brand new. Be sure to rinse it well. Use your sauna heater to dry it out thoroughly.

This is a good time to inspect each board in your sauna. Any board that is cracked or has splinters should be replaced. I don’t need to tell you what a splinter in the you know where would feel like!

Sauna rocks should also be taken out once a year and cleaned. You should not need to use any detergents – in fact you may not want to. While you are cleaning them inspect the rocks for any crumbling or cracking. Replace any rock that may be questionable.

If you have a wood burning sauna the summer is the time to make sure you have enough wood. Wood should be split and stacked for several months so that it is dry enough to burn properly.

With the proper care your sauna will last for many years.

Enjoy!
